Barbara Hepworth was born in 1903 in Wakefield, West Yorkshire, a place that would became an important inspiration for her artwork. Hepworth's work was exhibited in a solo show in London in 1937 and won increasing recognition in the decade following the Second World War. She exhibited in New York in 1949 and was chosen to exhibit at the Venice Biennale in 1950. In 1958 she was awarded a Commander of the British Empire and in 1965 was made a Dame Commander of the British Empire.
Barbara Hepworth died tragically in a fire in her St. Ives studio in 1975.
