Ian White was a leather artist practicing from his Adelaide studio from early 1970s. He was appointed Master Craftsman at Jam Factory design centre from 1978 and worked there for just over a decade. Then he took up the position of Senior Lecturer in Leather and Mixed Media at Canberra School of Art, now known as Australian National University (ANU) after five years he left to pursue a career in psychotherapy. White studied and worked internationally honing his practice and production towards more material-led making rather than functional objects. His work is held in many public and private collections throughout Australia and internationally.
