This revival of the Rogers and Hammerstein classic was the first to diverge from its original staging. Director Christopher Renshaw strived for greater authenticity in representing Siamese culture with casting and costuming. Fabrics and head-dresses were sourced directly from Bangkok. The King and I was nominated for eight Tony Awards, four of which it won including for Best Costume Design by Roger Kirk.
