Owen Broughton was an art teacher and sculptor whose work was highly influenced by modernism. He studied sculpture at the East Sydney Technical College from 1946. He then went on to study in Europe and worked as an assistant to Henry Moore and Barbara Hepworth in England from 1950-51. He then returned to Australia to work at Sydney's National Art School and then from 1962 he taught at the South Australian School of Art. He was an enthusiastic and highly effective teacher, grounded in technical knowledge and research. In addition to Adelaide, Broughton produced public sculpture commissions for Canberra and Mildura and his works are represented in the Art Gallery of New South Wales.
