Sir Sidney Nolan OM is one of Australias most highly acclaimed artists. In a varied career he was a founding member of the Contemporary Art Society of Victoria, designed sets and costumes for ballets, plays and operas, was editorially involved with the infamous journal Angry Penguins and completed war service in the army from 1942 to 1945.
Nolan spent much of his life in England, exhibited widely in Australia, Britain and the USA, and was the recipient of prestigious awards. Successive series of works earned him the reputation of Australias most internationally celebrated painter. He was awarded an Honorary Doctorate from the Australian National University in 1965, knighted for his services to art in 1981, and awarded the Order of Merit in 1983.
