Bert Flugelman has been recognised as an artist with boundless energy and a fine sense of style and occasion, with a rare understanding of space and how to use it.
Sculpture No. 2, also known as Vertical Variation, was the second of Flugelman’s sculptures at the Adelaide Festival Centre and was developed to supplement the larger Tetrahydrons sculpture on the Festival Plaza. This work was out of sight for many years and was installed in its current location after major redevelopment works in 2003.
Flugelman migrated to Australia in 1938. Between 1972 and 1983 he was a lecturer at the UniSA South Australian School of Art, where he became Head of Sculpture. It was during this period that some of his best-known works were produced including The Spheres affectionately called ‘Malls Balls’ in the Rundle Mall. In 1995, Flugelman was awarded an honorary Doctorate of Creative Art and in 1997 he received an Emeritus Award from the Australia Council's Visual Arts Board. In 2007, he was awarded a Doctorate of Letters from the University of New South Wales.
