Born in Mount Gambier in 1909, Sir Robert Helpmann CBE is amongst South Australia’s most famous sons. A great ballet dancer, choreographer and actor, Helpmann was recognised internationally for his achievements. This bust was commissioned in recognition of Helpmann’s contribution to the performing arts.
Adelaide's sculptor laureate, John Dowie AM, was commissioned to produce this bust shortly before Helpmann’s death in 1986. Originally commissioned to produce a full-scale sculpture from the waist up, Dowie instead produced this piece, which fittingly captures the essence of Helpmann’s expressive devotion to the performing arts.
Born in Adelaide in 1915, Dowie spent time living in London and Florence but worked most of his life in Adelaide. Dowie completed many commissions and his works feature in public spaces around Adelaide. Significant works in Australian cities include the Three Rivers Fountain (1968) in Victoria Square/Tarndanyangga, Adelaide, and a bronze of HM Queen Elizabeth II (1987), at Parliament House, Canberra.
