From 1-30 April, our Moving Image Program is exhibiting a selection of works on our King William Road digital screens.

Laura Banfield and Alexandra Kirwood, Significant Surfaces, moving image (still), 8:27

Laura Banfield is an artist working across video, photography, and performance. Alexandra Kirwood is a Masters candidate at RMIT University and a former Researcher in Residence at ACMI X. Together, their work explores relationships between bodies and images within the context of art, fashion, performance, and digital technologies. They aim to uncover the social implications of image-making by questioning our consumption of images, conventions of pose in fashion imagery, and digital representations of bodies. Beyond this work, Laura and Alexandra teach at RMIT University.

Images can shift consciousness. Screens are ubiquitous; they are part of us and deliver images to us. Who benefits from the delivery of these images to screens, and who is able to manipulate them?

'Significant Surfaces' explores relationships between bodies and images as they are mediated by screens. By comparing the saturation of digital images with other images, such as those of our daydreams, questions are raised about the organisation, access, consumption, and authorship of images.

Every image is, however, caught up in creating our realities and identities–physical and digital... In a world where visual media dominates, we are not only composed of bodies. We are formed by images too. – Alexandra Kirkwood and Laura Banfield, 2023
