Tanabata: Star Village transformed the Dunstan Playhouse foyer into a galaxy of stars delighting all who visited during the 2024 OzAsia Festival.
People of all ages were invited to immerse themselves in the enchanting world of Tanabata: Star Village, a free, interactive installation inspired by the centuries-old Japanese star festival.
Visitors were encouraged to participate in traditional Tanabata customs, crafting origami stars and writing heartfelt wishes on colourful tanzaku cards. These creations were then woven into a labyrinth of bamboo and textiles, creating a visual spectacle that celebrated the timeless story of two star-crossed lovers.
Adelaide Festival Centre's centrED program offered storytelling and origami-making workshops for local schools. These engaging activities allowed young minds to connect with the cultural significance of Tanabata and express their own hopes and dreams.
Tanabata: Star Village served as a poignant reminder of the power of hope in the face of uncertainty. The installation invited visitors to reflect on their aspirations and connect with the universal themes of love, loss, and longing.
Tanabata: Star Village was presented by ArtsPeople with Slow Art Collective and supported by Adelaide Festival Centre Foundation.
