From Streaky Bay to Orroroo – DreamBIG Children’s Festival Hits the Road to Celebrate 50 Years

Monday, 31 March 2025

DreamBIG Children’s Festival is embarking on a regional school tour over the next fortnight, bringing the birthday celebrations to children across South Australia with in-school workshops presented by artists.

The world’s longest running children’s festival will travel to Streaky Bay, Whyalla, Port Augusta, Tarlee, Riverton, Blyth, and Orroroo this week, followed by Yorketown, Wallaroo, Karoonda, Lameroo, Pinnaroo and Coomandook next week, helping students create the ultimate birthday costumes in celebration of the festival’s 50th year.

The in-school workshops will help children prepare for a grand, statewide birthday celebration on May 7, with the return of the popular Opening Parade. Teachers can choose to host their own parade at school the Opening Week of the festival (Week 2 Term 2) or take part in the celebratory on-site event at Adelaide Festival Centre.

DreamBIG Children’s Festival Director Georgi Paech: “DreamBIG has been humbled by the enthusiasm with which teachers, students and families have embraced the 2025 program. We are proud to bring beloved performances and workshops for children in regional South Australia to participate in, ensuring young people across the state have the opportunity to partake in this milestone.”

Adelaide Festival Centre CEO & Artistic Director Douglas Gautier AM: “DreamBIG Children’s Festival has made an incredible contribution to generations of South Australian children over the last 50 years. We look forward to welcoming more young people to explore the world of the arts in 2025 and beyond.”

More than 2.5 million children, families and teachers have participated in the festival since its inception in 1974 (as Come Out Festival), and it remains an intrinsic part of growing up in South Australia, placing young audiences at the centre of fresh, inventive, imaginative, and inspiring arts experiences.

Other regional events for children delivered by DreamBIG in 2025 include: Saltbush (Roxby Downs, Whyalla, Port Lincoln), The Frog Prince (Port Augusta, Whyalla, Ceduna, Riverland), Moss Piglet (Murray Bridge, Renmark, Mt Gambier, Port Pirie, Whyalla), Glow & Tell and Nunga Screen.
