Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II

Friday, 09 September 2022

Chair of Adelaide Festival Centre and previous Governor of South Australia, the Honourable Hieu Van Le AC, and CEO & Artistic Director, Douglas Gautier AM have paid tribute to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.

The Honourable Hieu Van Le AC: “Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II was an extraordinary woman who devoted her life to the service of others. She is a remarkable symbol of peace, compassion, resilience, and hope.  It is with great sadness that I pay my respects to her, her family, and friends on this day”.

Adelaide Festival Centre has a special connection with Queen Elizabeth II through the recently redeveloped theatre named in her honour, Her Majesty’s Theatre on Grote Street.

Flowers have been placed at Her Majesty’s Theatre as a tribute to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and the front lights of the theatre will remain on overnight to honour her.

During the Queen’s visit to Adelaide in March 1977, she officially visited the Adelaide Festival Centre Plaza.  Flowers have also been placed outside the Dunstan Playhouse.

The organ at Festival Theatre was commissioned in 1978 to mark the 25th year of the reign of Queen Elizabeth II and the organ was named the “Silver Jubilee Organ”.

Adelaide Festival Centre CEO & Artistic Director Douglas Gautier AM: “We pay our respects to Queen Elizabeth II. In our venues, flowers will be displayed in her honour and as a tribute to her lifetime of service. Adelaide’s Her Majesty’s Theatre holds a special place being named for Queen Elizabeth in 1962”.
