Adelaide Festival Centre is set to celebrate International Jazz Day with a performance by local bands, Women in Jazz Adelaide’s The New Standard and ER@SER DESCRIPTION, at Dunstan Playhouse on April 30. Tickets on sale today.
After a sold-out jazz concert in 2022, Adelaide Festival Centre will once again join the annual global celebrations for UNESCO’s International Jazz Day with a concert featuring jazz trio ER@SER DESCRIPTION in their Adelaide Festival Centre debut and a new arrangement from the Women in Jazz Adelaide nonet by women composers and an all-female band.
ER@SER DESCRIPTION’s unique style of music, performed by two synth players and a drummer, blends jazz, fusion, pop and soul. It has seen them perform at Perth International Jazz Festival and support acclaimed Australian artists such as Ocean Alley and 2023 Adelaide Cabaret Festival Co-Artistic Director Kate Ceberano.
Women in Jazz Adelaide emerged in 2021 to support women and gender diverse people in jazz that are living, working, and making music on Kaurna land. In an historically made-dominated space, their focus is on supporting and creating safe spaces for all people to be included in jazz and music.
Women in Jazz Adelaide’s co-founder Ruby Mensforth: “Women In Jazz Adelaide are thrilled to be collaborating with Adelaide Festival Centre again this year to celebrate International Jazz Day. We can’t wait to present The New Standard, a collective of some of Adelaide’s most exciting and talented musicians to share and celebrate the music of women.”
ER@SER DESCRIPTION’s Alex Flood: “Adelaide Festival Centre has been a pivotal piece in each of our individual careers over the years, not only as a place we’ve had the opportunity to perform at with various artists on different stages, but also as audience members.
“The three of us are incredibly excited to be returning to Adelaide Festival Centre to present our own original material this time, in celebration of International Jazz Day.”
The annual International Jazz Day celebration, held globally on April 30, recognises the incredible artform of jazz and is an opportunity to celebrate Adelaide as a UNESCO City of Music.
Adelaide was designated as a UNESCO City of Music in 2015 and is the first and only city in Australia to hold the title. The designation acknowledges the breadth, depth and vibrancy of the city’s music culture, international reach, history, aspirations, and collaborations.
Adelaide Festival Centre CEO & Artistic Director Douglas Gautier AM: “We invite all South Australians to celebrate the great music and amazing performers this International Jazz Day at Adelaide Festival Centre.
“International Jazz Day is a wonderful opportunity to showcase some of the incredible talent we have in South Australia while also forming stronger bonds across our neighbouring UNESCO cities.”
