Adelaide Festival Centre is set to celebrate International Jazz Day with an all-female force taking to the stage for a world-class performance at Space Theatre on Saturday, April 30 with tickets on sale today.
Adelaide Festival Centre will again join the annual global celebrations for UNESCO’s International Jazz Day with a concert by Women in Jazz Adelaide Big Band featuring 18 female jazz musicians including award-winning vocalist Lauren Henderson, local saxophonist legend Vashti Tyrrell and winner of the 2020 COMA Emerging Jazz Writer’s Award Christina Guala.
The International Jazz Day Concert will highlight the extraordinary power of music – specifically jazz – to bring people together by featuring classic big band favourites, modern compositions by female composers and a brand-new commissioned work created by Christina Guala.
Women in Jazz Adelaide was founded in 2021 by Adelaide Elder Conservatorium students Ruby Mensforth and Charlotte Kowald. Their focus is to support and create safe spaces for women and gender diverse people in the jazz and music scenes.
The annual International Jazz Day celebration, held globally on April 30, recognises the incredible artform of jazz and is an opportunity to celebrate Adelaide as a UNESCO City of Music.
Adelaide was designated as a UNESCO City of Music in 2015 and is the first and only City of Music in Australia. The designation acknowledges the breadth, depth and vibrancy of the city’s music culture, international reach, history, aspirations, and collaborations.
