Our Words 2020

Our words20 event 1920x1080

Spoken word from First Nations artists

A new initiative from Adelaide Festival Centre, OUR WORDS is a collection of original poems by First Nations poets from across the country. Recorded and preserved for presentation online and also appearing as part of the Celebrating OUR MOB 2020 exhibition at Adelaide Festival Centre, these works achieve what a written collection could not - transmitting the words of these extraordinary writers in their own voice and performance.

Like OUR MOB, the newly imagined OUR WORDS is a platform dedicated to connecting audiences to the works of contemporary First Nations artists - both emerging and established. Speaking on survival, history, truth and country, these are voices enriched with sixty thousand years of continuous culture and distilled by two hundred years of disruption and genocide. As it always has been, it’s time to listen.

OUR WORDS features new works from the following artists:

  • Laundered Winds, Dominic Guerrera - Kaurna / Ngarrindjeri (SA)
  • Kaldau, Courtney Hebberman - Ngarrindjeri / Peramangk (SA)
  • Somebody Tell Me, Steven Pappin - Barkindji (NSW)
  • Lives Matter, Faye Rosas Blanch - Yidinyji / Mbabaram (QLD)
  • Weaving Lessons: On Genocide - Natalie Harkin, Narungga (SA)
  • Dedication, Simone Ulalka Tur - Yankunytjatjara (SA)
  • Stolen, Mandy Brown - Ngarrindjeri / Peramangk (SA)
  • Blood Sings, Alexis West - Birri Gubba / Wakka Wakka South Sea Islander (QLD)
